Dios mio!
I am a football fan. I have been for years. And for as long as I have been a football fan, I have been a Barça fan. Perhaps one day I will wax poetic about my love for Futbol Club Barcelona but for now let me relish in today’s El Clasico.
For the uninformed, El Clasico is the Barça-Madrid derby and the Barça and Madrid rivalry is the probably the biggest in the world. El Clasico occurs twice annually (once at home, once away) and it is always a match worth watching.
This one was at home, at the beloved Camp Nou, and as an anti-madridista, I relish in writing that Madrid wasn’t able to manage a single goal. Seriously, not one. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Barça won – 5:0. Hala Madrid, indeed.
Barça had greater possession of the ball and was, undeniably, the better team in every single way – the scoreline is clearly reflective of that. I would’ve preferred it to have been a cleaner match on both sides. Nevertheless, it was an excellent game and a great day to be a Barça fan. Real Madrid, on the other hand, was utter shite and it seemed as if they didn’t know how to handle Barça’s constant passing and then runs to goal. Their defence? Like Swiss cheese J
Unsurprisingly, most of the Madrid squad eventually turned to anger. Cristiano Ronaldo pushing Pep Guardiola? I mean gimme a break! That guy is a piece of work. In this game there has got to be respect from the players for the coaches … of both teams. Some players took to making a complete a** out of themselves – Sergio Ramos, I’m looking at you … that tackle on Messi?! That the Madrid squad had a complete meltdown was not a surprise – the words ‘classy’ or ‘gracious in defeat’ don’t really come to mind when I think of them. The one exception is Xabi Alonso – the only player who it pains me to see in white.
There were several things I enjoyed about the game:
- I loved the montage at the end of the game with all the sad faces of the Madrid squad. The only one that I felt an iota of pity for Xabi’s look of despair after Villa’s goal
- I loved how excited Victor Valdes was after every goal. I hate that the goalkeepers have to celebrate alone – I’m celebrating with you, hun!
- I loved that Pique waved his 5 fingers to the crowd after that last goal
- I loved that at one point in the game Iker simply stood, hands across his chest with an expression that said it all
- I loved David Villa’s goals – in fact, I love David Villa, full stop
In any case, this match was like a déjà vu of that memorable day at the Santiago Bernabeu when the scoreline was 6-2. Madrid hasn’t been able to beat us since. They might some day. And I am well aware that takes more than winning El Clasico to win the league but let’s enjoy this victory shall we?!
Gracias to Pep and the Barça boys for a wonderful match.
